I found this book at the Day One (a parenting center) library. The Chinese "sitting month" is a one month period in which a new mom has to stay confined for the preservation of her health. Tradition has it that the new mom is supposed to do things like not leave the house, not wash her hair (because contact with water is considered unhealthy), only drink warm/hot liquids (cold liquids are bad), eat special rejuvenating foods, etc. The genesis of this confinement period was probably from the days when new moms were a lot more vulnerable due to poor medical care/sanitation. Nowadays, I understand people do their own modified versions.
